Culture shock is initiated by the anxiety that results from losing familiar surroundings and is not limited to people from different language background, or to people who move for long periods of time.
AnCOR with a difference, orientation for cultural transition has been designed with the needs of skilled-migrants, expatriates and repatriates in mind, who are undergoing a cultural transition by moving from one country to live and/or work in another. As a form of personal development it is aimed to increase awareness of the home culture, expand knowledge of the host culture, and assist in overcoming challenges and increasing the opportunities necessary in creating desired results in all facets of life.
Orientation for cultural transition emphasises the importance of understanding the impact of a complex cultural framework on an individual undergoing the major life transition. The aim of the orientation is to raise cultural sensitivity, literacy and competency, resulting in smoother transition and faster integration within the new surroundings.
The focus is on the individual in transition and incorporates adult learning principles appealing to all learning styles.
Emphasis is on engaging participants through interactive learning resources, stimulating curiosity and encouraging application of learning.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this orientation participants should be able to:

- Have a sound understanding of culture shock and recognising its signs
- Reflect on and discuss own experiences within the host culture
- Identify challenges of cultural transition
- Recognize opportunities raising from diversity
